WILSON ULTRA 100 V5: TENNIS RACKET REVIEW

Wilson’s most powerful racket silo, the Ultra series, has had a reboot and now harnesses not only explosive power, but enhanced accuracy and control with a clever bit of spin – all coated in a dazzling ‘Electric Indigo’ makeover.

The lay-up of the aerodynamic frame has been upgraded since the last iteration for a more performance driven response.

What are the innovation upgrades? …

‘SI3D’ tech innovation (which was unveiled for the Clash V3) boosts flexibility as well as stability – in turn embracing power, control and spin.

Wilson have also introduced they nattily named ‘Consistent Spec Control’ into the mix. As we understand it from Wilson there is ‘a tightened weight and balance improving swing consistency’.

String pattern: 16×19

Is the Ultra v5 pro-approved? …

The Ultra V5 has a bunch of heavyweight pro athletes behind it. Alex De Minaur, Qinwen Zheng, Maria Sakkari and Marta Kostyuk are all set to make the the switch to the new release. This gives the Ultra v5 some serious firepower and exposure on the big stage – something that was previously missing. Rising stars and intermediate players will no doubt be attracted by this.

So, let’s cut to the chase and see how the Ultra 100 V5 fires up on court in the hands of Gareth Richman – who enjoys nothing more than hitting big from the baseline and throwing in a few curve balls now and again.

What is the power aspect like? …

Serving and smashes produced massive amounts of ammunition and created enough dipping spin to hit my intended target zone. Ramping up to a flatter shot or shaping more linear arc on my groundies enabled me to drop bombs with ease and ample depth. I especially enjoyed committing into attacking shots and cutting off shots with short angles.

Was there a good response up at the net? …

Manoeuvrability is generally quick, responsive, solid and performed admirably. There was a nice bit of pop when I applied myself into the volley. On the flip slide, softening up or slicing raised eyebrows in a positive way.

Is accuracy a hit or miss? …

Obviously, unleashing shots with major force is the strong point of the Ultra v5. However, could I also dial into control and accuracy? Whilst, adjusting to a good few balls I seemed to spray balls wide or long.

Once I locked in and understood the dialogue of the frame, rewards of accuracy fell into place with consistent balance. Maybe, not to the calibre of pin point placement … but not too far off either.

The 99 Pro version with it’s 305g weighted frame, 22-24-21mm beam and 16×18 string pattern will give advanced players more control and accuracy for sure.

String set-up …

You don’t want to drop to low or high on string tension. The latter will create too much jarring through your arm and going down towards the lower end of the tension spectrum will cause control issues, as well as, excessive string movement.

I installed Alu Power 125 at 55lbs. In hindsight, dropping down to around 54/53lbs or even 54lbs in the mains and 53lbs in the crosses might be more bang on the money for my game style.

Let’s not forget about the looks …

Wilson have a knack of redefining the importance of design. When it comes to the looks department, this is central to the personality of the racket and player. The Ultra v5 is no exception, the bright blue iridescent hues sparkle from afar and truly sets the tone for devastating gameplay. It’s extremely attractive when you admire the gleaming metallic aquamarine graphics on the frame’s hoop and throat sections. Mixing in the ‘Light Baby Blue’ Luxilon Alu Power string set-up really makes the racket jump to a whole new level.

How does the Ultra stand next to it’s competitors? …

The Yonex eZone, Babloat Pure Drive and HEAD Boom are all strong performers in their own right but now have an reconfigured opponent in the ring to battle it out. This Ultra produces superb all round results and is big fun to play with. It’ll be interested to see if Wilson can gain an edge. Only time will tell on this one.

Summary …

Overall, I am truly surprised how comfortable and free the racket responded through it’s flight and contact point. This line is renowned for it’s stiffness. I was expecting a fair amount of kick back, but received an easy to use forgiving feel.

Whilst the Ultra v100 V5 centres on delivering raw power with improved accuracy (over it’s predecessor). In my view, the frame plays great from all angles in an effortlessly manner, but doesn’t particularly shine on any shot. One thing is for certain though, pound for pound this new offering is a sumptuous, plush affair and probably the best comfort to power frame I’ve tested.

Wilson have created a marvellous all court companion for hitters who like to take big cuts at the ball on court. Coupled with a smart colour coated finish and pro endorsement, the re-engineered Ultra 100 V5 will attract a wide base of players and potentially be a perfect hitting partner.
